Relationship Skills in Children: Social Awareness and Why it is Important

It is essential to develop relationship skills in a person right from their childhood. Relationship skills are critical for developing a well-behaved, considerate personality. Children who want to grow up into successful human beings, be aware of their surroundings and the people around them, and establish healthy relationships with others, must acquaint themselves with the principles of relationship skills.

Children develop relationship skills through experience, communication, and by imitating the relations that are exhibited around them. It is not something they learn at school or do a course on but develop over time. Skills like commitment, apathy, love, loyalty, and trust are hallmarks of a healthy relationship.

Through relationship skills, children realize how people around them are both good and bad. It helps them value people, understand everyone’s uniqueness, identify their likes and dislikes, listen to them actively, and acknowledges their opinions without any judgments.

Importance of Relationship Skills

If children need to successfully engage and appropriately interact with their mentors, friends, peers, and other people around them, it is a must for them to build relationship skills right from a very young age. These skills ensure that the relationships the children build around the course of time are not only rewarding and enriching but also long- lasting.

A strong relation also helps the children personally. When they can communicate and connect well with people around them, it brings them mental peace. They develop mutual respect for the person they interact with, can voice their emotions better, and explicitly say what they feel- all of which are cornerstone components that facilitate mental peace and harmony.

How to Build Relationship Skills in Children

It is important to recognize and acknowledge personal preferences and individuality before committing to a person or becoming a part of a relationship. Having said that, it is also vital to build the relationship at every stage by becoming interested in other people’s well-being and welfare.

Children should be encouraged to showcase their feelings and emotions at every point. Parents and guardians must make it a point to communicate with their kids and respect their kid’s feelings. They should be encouraged to be a part of supportive environments where people respect each other’s opinions and views.

Ample time must be spent with the kids where they must be facilitated to explore and develop emotional and mental intelligence. They should be taught how to handle conflicts of interest by respecting other people's opinions and finding common ground for the issues.

Children should be taught how to be thankful. They must learn how to nurture their relationships with people, stay away from harbouring feelings of remorse and hate, be grateful, and express appreciation for the things they love.
